In 1883 Sir Oliver Lodge first demonstrated the use of electrostatic precipitation for the collection of dust particles.
In 1886 the first attempt on a commercial scale to precipitate dust and fume from gas was made by Oliver Lodge and Mr A. O. Walker at Deeside Lead Works, Chester.
In 1913 the Lodge Fume Deposit Company Limited was formed. Its offices were in Great Charles Street, Birmingham, England.
Work began in 1914 at the Skinningrove Iron Company on the first electrical precipitator in the world to clean blast furnace gas.
In 1919 the Lodge Fume Deposit Company was replaced by the Lodge Fume Company Limited.

Oliver Lodge's many successes were admired by Dr. Cottrell of America as being "splendid pioneer work".
In 1922 an agreement was reached with the International Precipitation Corporation of California, USA for full interchange of information and patents. In recognition of Dr. Cottrell's contribution to electrical precipitation, the Lodge Fume Company decided to change its name to Lodge-Cottrell Ltd.
Continued expansion necessitated larger premises and, in 1929, the company moved to its present location at George Street, Birmingham.
In the early 1990's Lodge-Cottrell acquired the gas cleaning activities of the Peabody Sturtevant and Peabody Holmes companies and the 3 operations merged to form Lodge Sturtevant Limited.
In 1994, Lodge Sturtevant Limited was acquired by
FLS miljø a/s of Copenhagen, Denmark, part of the
FLS Industries Group.
In 1998 the business of EAF, acquired in 1992 by
FLS miljø, was merged with Lodge Sturtevant.
In 2003 the Lodge Sturtevant business became a
subsidiary of F.L.Smidth Airtech.
In 2005 Lodge Sturtevant Ltd was acquired by Korea
Cottrell Co., Ltd.
In 2007 Korea Cottrell became KC Cottrell Co., Ltd
and the name Lodge Sturtevant was changed to its
original 1922 name of Lodge Cottrell.
